Before something else, one must consider the type of skin he has and the level of skin pigmentation. It is wise to seek medical suggestions from the dermatologist prior to actually trying any of these whitening lotions or creams. There are multiple ways in how whitening products work. Certain products have acids that get rid of skin that is old and exposes new layers of skin.

This could possibly be called bleaching. This type of whitening process will let you experience slight itching in the used area, skin dryness and dry skin peeling off literally, which is very unsightly. Seeing this effect on somebody else’s face would make the rest of the consumers fearful in trying out other skin lightening creams. But really, how does skin whitening cream work?

One or more of the following basic ingredients which could be found in the whitening creams inhibit melanin production, which is responsible for our dark skin. The most commonly used ingredient for this purpose is the licorice extract.

This component is said to absorb UVA and UVB rays from the sun and reduces melanin production. Next in rank is the kojic acid. Japanese cosmetics which could be intended to whiten skin normally use this type of acid.

In addition, Cosmetic manufacturers also use Octyl-p-methoxycinnamate. This ingredient acts as a sunscreen along with Octyl salicylate and Oxybenzone. Hydroquinone although is said to be a very effective whitening agent in volumes of 2%-4%. However, there are numerous researchers who oppose the utilization of this ingredient because of the possible adverse reactions on the skin and unreported outbreaks of Ochronosis in Africa

Though there are other ingredients that have reported cases of adverse effects, but extensive research is getting done to ensure how the whitening products are always safe for application. Most of these ingredients suppress the production of melanin which is responsible for dark skin, age spots and other skin discolorations.

These contents are but a few of the energetic ingredients in whitening creams to achieve whiter skin. With the above-mentioned ingredients and its results on the skin, you can now answer anyone the next time they ask you if skin whitening cream does work.
